Microsoft buys Skype for USD8.5b cash deal.

Interesting news coming hot on the heels of Nokia’s overt sellout to Microsoft by dumping the Symbian OS (for phones) in favour of Microsoft’s Windows Mobile Platform.

What is Microsoft’s game plan? To continue to restrict market growth through acquiring competing platforms? To acquire Skype’s customer base? or revenue stream? (Skype’s paying customers jumped 19% in 2010) If its just a financial-based acquisition, it may be sound, but if Microsoft is thinking of mashing Nokia hardware, with Windows Mobile and Skype, it sounds like another case of Wal-Mart disease.
